During the early 2000’s, Jun Takahashi’s Undercover collections dived deeper into their punk roots and started exploring political activism while expressing his need to revolt. AW2001 ‘Decorated Armed Voluntary Forces’ contained anti-war messages as well as similar sentiments towards the violence caused by the global drug economy, seeing the two as linked. This graphic features extremist leader Osama B*n Laden, contrasted against a classic painter’s spread of fruit, enjoying a smoke highlighted in orange. Takahashi would continue to use the figure as graphic inspiration in SS2002’s ‘The Illusion of Haze’ and AW2003’s ‘Paperdoll’.
