This iconic outerwear from Helmut Lang’s SS1998 show combines the elegance of his womenswear runways with the utilitarian spirit of his menswear garments. The garment features two buttoned leg straps, acting as thigh holsters for the draping hems of this coat and taken from early biker jacket designs meant to keep long coats away from the bike and secured against the wind. The straps are secured to 100% cotton panels that feature a slight stretch, allowing the wearer to utilize the leg straps without feeling overly constricted or compromising the dramatic silhouette. At the cuffs are elasticated closures similar to those on heavy biker jackets, meant for keeping out wind. This piece also features internal snaps, intended for combining with compatible Helmut Lang liner jackets and shirts. Other details worth noting include the incredibly durable suede-backed button holes, the strap closure at neck with metal hardware and single-welt front flap pockets.
