Number (N)ine
Number (N)ine was founded in Tokyo in 1996 by Takahiro Miyashita and quickly became one of the defining labels of Japanese avant-garde menswear. Drawing heavily from American music, vintage clothing, and the mythology of rock ’n’ roll, Miyashita developed a distinct aesthetic built around distressed fabrics, layered silhouettes, intricate graphics, and meticulous construction.
The label’s most celebrated period spans the late 1990s through the mid-2000s, when its collections increasingly blended references to punk, grunge, western wear, and classic American sportswear. Seasonal collections became highly conceptual, with recurring themes and graphics giving Number (N)ine a cult following among collectors and establishing Miyashita as one of Japan’s most influential designers.
Today, vintage Number (N)ine is among the most sought-after Japanese archive fashion. Rare runway pieces, early collections, and Japan-exclusive garments are particularly prized for their craftsmanship, unusual detailing, and connection to Miyashita’s original vision. The label’s influence continues to be felt throughout contemporary menswear and the growing market for Japanese fashion archives.
